The attacker was clinical with his goals and could have had more. He took his chances early and always looks dangerous in front of goal

Interesting Fact

Diego Costa is in great form at just the right time; scoring seven goals in his last eight appearances.

Chelsea put five past Newcastle which included a brace from Pedro and a memorable goal for Betrand Traore.

An early goal from Diego Costa set the mood for an onslaught. The striker didn’t let his much-talked about protective mask affect his game, as he instinctively guided the ball into the net with a deft touch inside the box. Pedro added to the scoreline with his first in the game before Willian added a third before the twenty-minute mark.

With three shots on target and three goals, Chelsea were clinical, comfortable and looking dangerous with each and every attack. All of the goals conceded were being gifted to the Champions through some poor defending by Newcastle. The Tyneside club struggled to worry Chelsea and unable to do so, were constantly peppered with dangerous attacks.

Chelsea had chances to add further goals but misses from Ivanovic and Pedro kept the score at three before half-time.

It would have been a near perfect first half for the Blues, had John Terry not had to go off injured. A clash between the Chelsea captain and Aleksander Mitrovic had the defender coming off the worse. A suspected groin injury looks to have definitely ruled him out of the upcoming Champions League tie.

The second half started a little more subdued as this Chelsea team enjoyed the comfortability of knowing the game had been won already.

Nevertheless Chelsea’s foot hadn’t come off the pedal completely. A brilliantly guided ball from Cesc Fabregas found fellow Spaniard Pedro. The attacker evaded his marker and took the shot early on leaving the keeper with little chance to stop his second rustling the net.

Pedro had two but could have easily bagged himself a hat trick this match. However it will do good for the player to renew some of his confidence. Chelsea can benefit from his ability to find the goal and will hope this has lit a fire under his belly.

A final Chelsea goal put a cherry on top with a celebratory goal for youngster Bertrand Traore. Grabbing his first Premier League, the Bukino Faso international finished a lovely move for the Blues.

Good vibes at Stamford Bridge as Guus Hiddink’s unbeaten run looked set to continue.

The scoreline was slightly blemished with a brilliant shot and goal by Andros Townsend in the last few minutes of the game. Embarrassed to even celebrate, the Toon player recognised that his team had been soundly beaten and have work to do in the remainder of the season.

Likewise, this Chelsea team, despite the flattering scoreline, will have work to do. While Newcastle presented little attacking threat, PSG will be a lot more difficult to contain.

Thankfully this game will have renewed confidence in front of goal for Chelsea’s attackers and reassured the team that they can be clinical up front. This Chelsea team undoubtedly have quality, as they showed against Newcastle, now its time to show it against much-better opposition. Come on you Blues.

UPDATE: John Terry has been confirmed to have suffered from a minor hamstring injury, ruling him out of the Champions League tie. Hopefully the Chelsea captain will be fit enough to return for the Fa Cup tie at the weekend.
